When re-skinning beats replacing
Screens fail one part at a time, and the frame outlives the mesh by years. Re-skin when the mesh has gone brittle, sagged out of the frame, or torn somewhere you cannot patch neatly. If a piece of the old mesh cracks when you flex it between your fingers, it is done.
The three grades
Standard grey is 18 x 16 with 66% open area. Midge black is 20 x 20 with 45% open area and stops no-see-ums as well. Pet mesh is 10 x 16 heavy polyester that claws do not tear. You can mix them around the house.
Fitting it
Lay the sheet over the frame with a little overlap and hold it taut, not stretched. Overstretched mesh pulls a light frame out of square and goes slack again anyway once the tension settles. Trim the excess with a sharp blade once the edge is held.
